MotoGP 3 (often stylized as MotoGP3) is a Grand Prix motorcycle racing video game developed and published by Namco for the PlayStation 2. Released in 2003, it is the third game in the Namco series, which coincided with the THQ series for a number of years.

Gameplay[edit]

The gameplay is very similar to past games by Namco, like MotoGP (PS2) and MotoGP 2. MotoGP 3 is based on the 2002 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season, but with the introduction of four stroke bikes, the gameplay has some slight differences. The new 990cc 4-stroke bikes are faster but harder to handle, while the 500cc 2-strokes are less faster but slightly better to handle.

MotoGP 3 has far more tracks than the previous game, with 15 real world courses which include Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, Paul Ricard, Motegi and Mugello. There are also a combination of fantasy layouts. When starting the game up for the first time, players can create a custom rider. After that, they will be brought to the menu screen where they can access a number of options. The first is arcade, where the players can choose the bike they wish to ride, number of laps, weather, difficulty and settings to do a race. Season mode puts them into a season with any team (depending on difficulty) and the player races on a combination of circuits to try and win the championship. Time Trial is like Arcade, except that rather than racing against a number of opponents for a number of laps, the player races against the clock to try to get the best time for as long as desired. Challenge mode is a series of challenges that players can play. They range from beating another rider, riding between cones, setting a specific lap time in Time Trial or winning a race at a specific track. Completing challenges will unlock riders, movies and pictures. Multiplayer allows players to race against up to four other people. Legends mode is, like Time Trial, similar to Arcade mode, except rather than facing riders from 2002, they face riders from past seasons, including the likes of Kevin Schwantz, Wayne Gardner and Mick Doohan to name a few.

The game also includes fictional riders based on Namco game franchises. Susumu Hori is only available in the PAL and Japanese version of the game.

The game received 'favorable' reviews according to the review aggregation website Metacritic.^[1]MotoGP 3 was successful in Italy: Sony Computer Entertainment Italia reported just under 100,000 sales by March 2004.^[12]

MotoGP 3 is the most significant upgrade to the MotoGP franchise to date; offering a wide variety of improvements.

MotoGP 3 is another version in the long line of MotoGP games produced. As this enhancement was first released in 2003, it should be expected that the graphics are not as rich as newer games. Still, MotoGP 3 offers all of the white-knuckle thrills and spills that have come to define this series. We should also note that refined controls, more motorcycles and fierce competition are a few of the factors that have attracted so many players over the years. This game is supported by most Windows operating systems.

Better Control

An impressive improvement can be seen in heightened motorcycle control during game play. This was actually one of the few criticisms of previous platforms. Although default settings are preferred by some, additional options allow for greater levels of customisation. Weight placement, a separation of the front and rear brakes and analogue throttling capabilities are examples of such modifications. The user will also have the ability to either manually or automatically shift between gears. This is a great option for street competitions when one's focus should be upon the course as opposed to the movements of the rider.

Season Mode

Some feel that the most impressive achievement of MotoGP 3 can be seen in what is known as season mode. This selection will enable the player to race against such well-known greats as Loris Capriossi, Max Biaggi and Valentino Rossi. An added sense of realism is the end result of this option. Of equal importance is the ability for the rider to select certain conditions such as the number of laps and even the weather. Tyres, gears and handling can be modified before a race as well. Easy and hard settings provide the player with valuable experience although only a few teams are unlocked during the hard setting.

Graphics

41 bikes are ultimately available although in the beginning, only 12 can be accessed. More will be unlocked with experience points and as the game progresses. Although made in 2003, MotoGP 3 still boasts some rich graphics in comparison to other platforms manufactured around this same time. However, players should not expect intricate and smooth motions such as would be seen in more modern variants. What may be lacking in graphics is certainly made up for in the range of motorcycles and racers to be discovered as the game unfolds.

Sound

The sounds are very rich for a game that is more than a decade old. Not only does each individual motorcycle have its own unique exhaust signature, but other effects such as the shifting of gears, the squealing of brakes and even wind serve to add to the ultimate experience of the racer.

System Requirements

MotoGP 3 is compatible with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows NT and Windows 2003. At a size of only 13.3 megabytes, most standard systems can accommodate its size with little strain on existing memory. Direct X 9.0 is the recommended video codec to be used.
