What is Auro-3D?

What’s different about Auro-3D?

Unlike objected oriented sound formats, like Dolby Atmos, Auro-3D is a lossless channel based PCM solution, similar to Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio. Auro Technologies asserts that when we listen, our brain expects a high degree of auditory coherence between sounds in order to register them as genuine and authentic.

In other words, true immersion is only achieved when the listener is presented with a truly seamless and comprehensive surround field, with a significant emphasis on height channels.

This is why the Auro-3D format utilizes height channel both above and around the listener, by using the Top layer. The diagram below shows this principal in action, and how sound mixed in this format is broken down by layers. It perfectly illustrates the approach Auro-3D is going for, in order to create what the company define as the vertical stereo field.

So, what’s the situation like on the home theater front?

The speaker systems? Uptake from Hollywood? Availability of media mixed in Auro-3D?

The Auro-3D format is designed to deliver all kinds of content from all potential sources like film, games, broadcast, music events and more in consumer oriented markets like home entertainment systems, automotive, mobile and gaming. Multiple configurations are supported, including HT 9.1 and 10.1 surround speaker systems, as well as Cinema 11.1 and 13.1 surround systems.
